Alton

Welcome to Alton

A bustling neighborhood with a sense of serenity unlike any other lake town

Formed near the southern tip of Lake Winnipesaukee, Alton is a bustling yet serene community. While the lake activities and abundance of dining destinations bring in crowds, there is still a sense of peace to the area that many other lake towns do not experience. It's a very family-oriented neighborhood with a camp, numerous parks, and various islands and natural areas to explore. You will find a plethora of waterfront homes that provide the most picturesque views you can imagine.

What to Love

  • Overall lake life vibe and abundance of water-based activities
  • Variety of restaurants, including many on the water
  • Serenity of the area, despite its usual bustling atmosphere
  • Expansive list of natural habitats to explore

Local Lifestyle

Because Alton isn't quite as busy as other nearby lake towns, locals enjoy far more serenity. While the community is still bustling with festivals, events, and plenty of attractions, it isn't nearly as crowded as other spaces. Get out and enjoy your surroundings any way you see fit. Alton also offers easy access to the southern communities of New Hampshire, where there is even more to explore.

Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping

Plenty of dining destinations fill the area. Shibley's at the Pier is a well-loved option and an ideal spot for lunch and dinner. Sitting along the water, you can enjoy picturesque views while you feast. Fried calamari, Reuben egg rolls, creamy lobster linguine, Polynesian meatballs, seafood risotto, and butternut ravioli with duck are just a few of the menu offerings.

Dockside Restaurant is a similar solution. Residing near the water, you can take in the beautiful views while eating. They also have live acts perform on the weekends. Enjoy shrimp bruschetta, sauteed mussels, clam chowder, stuffed lobster, a porterhouse steak, or a seared salmon filet.

Bayside Diner and Eatery is one of the best choices in the area for breakfast. Opening daily at 7 am, you can feast on a hearty meal before you start your day. French toast, Portuguese-poached eggs, traditional egg benedict, omelets, pancakes, and biscuits and gravy are just a few of their selections.

When you're craving a cold dessert, Stillwells Ice Cream is a favored spot in town. They serve unique creations made from farm-fresh ingredients. With generous servings and delicious flavors, you'll be more than satisfied with your treat.

Discover the collection of shops near the Monument Square Historic District. Hannaford is a popular supermarket and pharmacy in town where patrons nearby select their groceries. The Alton Country Store is a gift shop selection, while Always in Season is one of the best places to get your fishing supplies and locally-made jams.

Things to Do

Numerous festivals and events take place in Alton around the lake. Enjoy the water ski show during Old Home Week in August, or partake in a paint night. The bandstand is also located in the bay and is close to the town dock. Many concerts are held here if you're interested in hearing live music.

Mt Major is situated in Alton. Take the hiking trails to the top and bask in the glorious views you'll discover. Overall, this is a fairly easy hike without too many challenges to slow you down. Get to the peak of the mountain, and you get to see the lake that lives nearby.
